GURU

So, here goes my first post for this new year, a movie review of the much expected film from Mani Ratnam who has yet again proved that he is exceptional.

Warning : Spoilers ahead

'Guru' is a story of an ordinary man with extra-ordinary ambition and determination who turns from a visionary to a conqueror. Gurukant Desai (Abhishek Bachchan) is a school drop-out and he leaves for Turkey to work for a European company where he learns the nuances of the textile and petrol trade. He then returns to India to embark upon his own business venture much against his father's wish. He marries his friend's sister Sujatha (Aishwarys Rai), for the dowry which serves as the capital for his business.

Guru, along with his wife and brother-in-law, leaves for Bombay, the world of business in India, open only to the rich. He fights the aristocracy with the help of a newspaper proprietor, Manikdas Gupta (Mithun Ckakravarthy) who is very much impressed with the enteprising young man. Guru succeeds in making a mark for himself as 'Gurubhai'.

Gurubhai starts the Shakthi Corporation which grows into a multi-locational monolith. For the first time in the Indian business history, he ushures in the concept of multi-share holding ownership.

Manikdas Gupta is highly dissatisfied with the unethical business practices of Gurubahi and commands his favourite reporter Syham Saxena (Madhvan), who is also against Gurubahi's ideologies, to dig deep and expose Gurubhai.

The high-point of the movie is Gurubahi's thought-provoking outburst at the commission of enquiry where he justifies the means of his success.

Abhishek Bachchan hogs the limelight with his unparalleled performance. He emerges as a diligent, compassionate and pragmatic individual. His expressions explicitly articulate his emotions and the audience is enraptured by his powerful performance. He is truly a chip of the old block.

Aishwarya Rai deserves accolade for her remarkable rendition sans histrionics. She sails through with grace and refinement that befits the Bachchan family.

Mithun Chakravarthy acts with elan that proves that the spark is still alive in him. 'Guru' is his memorable comeback.

Madhavan's performance enamours the audience and holds them spellbound and makes one wish that his role could have been stronger.

Vidhya Balan's supporting role as Meena, a vivacious young girl with Multiple Sclerosis, is to highlight Gurubhai's sensitivity and she does justice to her role. The on-screen chemistry between Vidhya and Madhavan holds one captive.

The 'Guru' soundtrack affirms that A. R. Rehman is undoubtedly one of the ingenious contemporary musicians. Songs like 'Tere bina' and 'Ey Hairathe' are intoxicating. 'Barso re', 'Jaage hain', 'Mayya', 'Ek lo ek muft' and 'Baazi laga' prove Rehman's class, yet again.

Mani Ratnam has captured subtlety of characters in his own inimitable style that is gripping and impeccable. The movie bears the impress of a strong personality. No role is underplayed or unjustified. The movie attenuates and lacks depth in few scenes. But, on the whole, the movie is charaterful with brilliant screenplay, great music and amazing photography. It is truly an exceptional stagecraft by a director of great ingenuity and outstanding finesse.

Once in a Blue Moon!!!

So, people call my blog 'once in a blue moon blog', do they??? Hmm....anyone knows what it really means?? This is what I got when I googled it. er.......erratic googling (:D).

According to the popular definition, it is the second Full Moon to occur in a single calendar month.
The average interval between Full Moons is about 29.5 days, whilst the length of an average month is roughly 30.5 days. This makes it very unlikely that any given month will contain two Full Moons, though it does sometimes happen.
On average, there will be 41 months that have two Full Moons in every century, so you could say that once in a Blue Moon actually means once every two-and-a-half years.

Origin of the phrase:

A blue moon was originally cited as something impossible and later came to mean unlikely. There are rare examples of the moon actually appearing blue, after volcanic eruptions or unusual weather conditions. Another possible derivation is from The Maine Farmers' Almanac. When there were two full moons in a calendar month the first was printed in red, the second in blue.

1528 W. BARLOW Rede Me (1895) 114 Yf they saye the mone is belewe, We must beleve that it is true.

1529 J. FRITH Pistle Christian Reader lxxi. sig. Niv, They wold make men beleue..that ye mone is made of grene chese.

Expect my next post for the next blue moon (:D).....so long!!!

Why do Weekends Whiz Past??? :((

Weekends.....they never seem to come and when they do they just whoosh by. I was looking forward to put my feet up and take a break after a week of the dog's life. Alas!! That was an ill-fated wish.....It was announced in that unsparing college of mine that we had college on Saturday.Have you heard of anything more unfair?? I somehow tolerated the day, cursing the college, lamenting my fate and eagerly waiting for Sunday to get there. And Sunday was sunnier. I woke up very late in the moning and was happy to see that my dad was home from Chennai. I completed my morning chores, switched on the computer, listened to some of my favourite songs, read some blogs and then posted one. I had not planned a laid back Sunday for I had too much of work to be completed - tests in two subjects, two records, one observation and three assignments to complete, but then isn't the fun in having lots to do and not doing it?? So, I just had a lazy afternoon with no thoughts about Monday morning. Then, I had my bath at 4.00 and my lunch at 5.00. I went to the terrace after that, counted the number of birds returing to their nests :P, loafed around and then returned home. The evening was drawing to a mellow close and I thought of dropping a post :D....Now its 8 p.m., and I shudder to think of tomorrow. My Monday morning blues have already begun and I am not looking forward to spending a sleepless night. Now, I have to go complete the whole load of hoeworks....So long then!!!

Physics and Piety???!!!

Hmm....you know what the name 'Sujatha' means?? It means 'beauty' or 'beyond grasp - as in transcendent'. My Physics lecturer goes by that name. She is indeed 'beyond grasp'.....we have to listen with atmost concentration to grasp what she says and does. And this was what she did in class on Friday - no.....I would better start from Thursday....Our class was boisterous when she entered. That made her already ever-bad mood worse, if that is possible. She said that we would 'get first prize for talking'. Friday was a dead ringer of Thursday. Only this time she asked us "What did I 'SAY' you yesterday? I 'said' you that you will come first in......" The guys shouted " Mam....placements", "Mam....studies"etc....etc...And she gave us a baleful stare. She turned to the board looking foreboding. She had to vent her spleen on someone, din't she?? So, she faced us again, searched our faces and decided on a boy...." last benchla corner paiyan.....neendhan.... chandana pottu azhaga....ezhundhurupa." Every person in class had tears in their eyes due to supressed laughter. He got up and she continued, " Naa en nethiyila Kunkumam vekkaraen theriyuma??" (Now.....how did he propose to answer that??!!!!!!!) So, he just stood and blinked. "Because I am married!!" (What were we supposed to do with that piece of info.??!!)

" Nee en chandanam vechurukkanu naan sollatumma?? Because you want to hide your true self from others. You want to project yourself as a very good and calm boy. But you cant fool ME.
Enakku ungala pathi nallave theriyum. Indha Veebudhi, chandanam ellam verum show." (I touched my forehead at once to check if Veebudhi was still there...and my friend informed me that it was gone. We looked at each other carefully and burst out into silent giggles) The boy looked very pitiful and atlast she asked him to sit. All of us heaved a collective sigh of relief as the period ended. And the whole class burst out laughing as she went out.

P.S:

I am generally not in the habit of insulting teachers. But then, if I am going to have such teachers then I dont think that I can help myself.

Brother bother!!!!!!!

As i sit down to type this post i am thinking of all those fortunate people out there who are leading a peaceful life with no younger siblings. I was just poked in my eyes by my younger brother ' The Villianous Vishnu a.k.a. Vignesh'. And did he feel atleast a bit sorry that he hurt me???!!! NO. He just turned back, shouted "serves you right", glared at me with a look that said 'next time you ask me the computer while i am working with it, you will see what happens'. The COMPUTER - that's the root cause of the problem. I had had him packed off yesterday when he was playing 'Little Fighter 2' because i had an important mail to send to my dad. And then i had refused to get up as Nithya had come home and we had commenced our daily research for Kurukshetra. Ha......here he comes....uh....maybe to apologize for hurting me. Hmm...I am waiting.....NO....He has come to check if my mom is asleep (sigh). Ha....he has switched on the television, to see Harry Potter I suppose (hehehe......moms going to be furious). Now.....i dint tell why he poked me, did I? It was because he had to send some important mail to my cousin and I refused to budge. But then this happens everyday. You will never guess what happens everynight!! He is always in his 'pest' behaviour. We fight even when we are asleep. He discards his bed-covers, kicks me and comes and sleeps under me. And what am I suppose to do?? Keep Quiet!!!!!!!!!!!! Nowadays, I have started pinching him (Hahaa...that serves him right!!). I think I would better stop now else people will come to know how childish elder ones can be too :D. I would better go and console that ghastly brother of mine. He is sitting with such a sorry face that it breaks my heart to see him (huh....senti). But then, I dont know what I would do without him. Life would be a dead bore sans his pestering, his copying my Y! avatar or my user-ID or my password : He has promised me that he would start with blogging too and would have more number of posts than I do!!!! Here he comes again....I am sure to snatch the PC from me (sigh)....k.....gtg....bye!!!
